March 2025. We rented a 4x4 and drove the incredible Hatt Mountain Road from Muscat to Al Khutaim. There we stayed in a guesthouse overlooking the Jebel Shams valley, also known as the “Grand Canyon of Oman.”
At sunrise we began the hike along the canyon rim to a watering hole. The hike is called, appropriately, The Balcony Walk. We then traveled to the Beehive Huts, an ancient burial ground and UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, local Omanis flagged us down and insisted we share their dates and coffee.
We moved onward to Bahla Fort before retiring in the Jebel Akhdar mountains. The next day featured Nizwah Fort with its cultural activities and the famous Nizwah Souq.
