Mosques and Minarets in Muscat

March 2025

Relatively modest for a Gulf capital and spared the gaudiness of its neighbors, Muscat retains its historic charm. Oman is perhaps the only Arab petrostate whose connection to its ancient heritage was not erased by oil wealth nor overshadowed by the flashiness of useless vanity projects. Unlike its neighbors, Oman seems to favor cohesion and restraint over spectacle.

That said, photo opportunities are somewhat limited, though the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the startling exception to that rule. Named after the man who modernized Oman after committing a bloodless coup against his own father, the mosque is sprawling yet proportionate, ornate yet demure.
