Museums of Salt Lake City

December 2025

The Hill Aerospace Museum sits just outside the Air Force base of the same name to the north of Salt Lake City. It hosts an impressive collection of historically significant aircraft, including many that even the Udvar-Hazy (see photoset) lacks such as the F-117 Nighthawk. My favorite was the F-16 dressed in the striking orange Hill AFB livery, which is the closest we will ever get to a fighter jet in Coast Guard colors.

We also visited the Utah Natural History Museum, which presents the state’s rich dinosaur fossil record alongside exhibits exploring Indigenous cultures across the American West. As impressive as the collections are, the building itself is also a work of art. The corten steel facade, concrete walls, and expansive windows fit and frame its environment perfectly.

Together, these museums chart different scales of time and power, from prehistory to the aviation age.
